Elvis recorded for the album called 'How Great Thou Art!' over 4 days in May starting on May 25th 1966. Elvis recorded it in just four takes. A friend of his, Jerry Schilling who was present in the session, commented on how much it drained Elvis as he gave everything to this recording.
For Elvis though, this was his roots shining through as for him, gospel music is where it had started all those years before. The album, was launched in February 1967. By February 1968 it was certified as Gold by the RIAA.
One month later in March 1968, Elvis won his first ever Grammy Award for "How Great Thou Art!" for 'Best Sacred Performance. Later, in 1972, Elvis would win another Grammy for this same song but for a live performance on the album "Elvis Recorded live on Stage in Memphis". All of Elvis' three Grammy Awards were for gospel songs.
